The Missions of Baja California

Google Earth Placemarks

According to an article by John Pack in the January 2010 edition of Mexico Living, the Mex 5 road south of San Felipé from Puertecitos south towards Gonzaga Bay and ultimately connecting with Mex 1 south of Cataviña has apparently been paved in first class fashion to within 5 miles of Puertecitos. Ugh! There goes the 4x4 off-road neighborhood.

aaa_baja.jpg (6222791 bytes)Ever wonder why Loreto, San Felipé, Los Cabos and other select Mexican destinations come into being and grow like crazy? It's not luck or coincidence. It's all very well-planned. Thanks to Fonatur, the "institution responsible for the planning and development of sustainable tourism projects." And with respect to the Baja Peninsula specifically, there is the vision of the Escalera Nautica, the Nautical Ladder --- a mega project. As of August 2009, this project was HALTED by the Mexican federal government. Yippie! The new Baja Almanac is out!  After being out of print for 4 years and losing both my copies, I ordered 4 to make sure I have a backup and give two away as gifts.

Lunch with Lionel & Judy in Pacific Beach (San Diego).

Overnight at Roberts K-38 Surf Motel for $10. What a dump!

Almost none on this trip. This trip is strictly business so I can make a decision. See little red book for details.

I came down to apartment hunt. And network (mostly with ex-pat Americans at the Bahía Cantiles bar. For a little casita or small condo. Saw a few between $375 - $475 per month. Most were nearly beachfront. Fully furnished. Including utilities. What to do when one has no job?

Beautiful evening sunset south of Rosarito along the free road. jan30_sunset1.jpg (543497 bytes) jan30_sunset2.jpg (576222 bytes)
Sunday, January 31
None. See little red book for details.  Paid for a 4-hour private Spanish lesson from Luis Montañez while I had the VW Jetta serviced. Overnight at Costa Dorada Motel for $20. Tolerable. No heat.

An earthquake rocked us for about 5 seconds in the early morning hours. feb01_earthquake.jpg (106091 bytes)
