So what started off as going off to Baja for three weeks to clear my head, feel the warm rays of the summer sun on the Tropic of Cancer and do a little networking for Baja job opportunities has turned into a 10-week sojourn including settling down for the month of June in my own little cabaña near the Villa del Palmar resort in Cabo San Lucas. |

Ever wonder why Los Cabos and other select Mexican destinations come into being and grow like crazy? It's not luck or coincidence. It's all very well-planned. Thanks to Fonatur, the "institution responsible for the planning and development of sustainable tourism projects." And with respect to the Baja Peninsula specifically, there is the vision of the Escalera Nautica, the Nautical Ladder --- a mega project; canceled "as is" in early 2010. |

The previous evening ... bizarre. Or watch the video. |

After getting up at 5:45 (I thought it was still 6:45 because I crossed a time zone change), the four of us had a leisurely breakfast. The I knocked-down, packed up, help launch the inflatable kayak and got on my way. |
Oh yeah, we found a small dead scorpion on the picnic table. Good reason to sleep in a tent, even inside a house, and keep things zippered. |

After our communal breakfast, I departed Camp Gecko at 7:15. It took until 7:55 to drive the 5 miles into LA Bay back down that awful road. Stocked up on ice and headed back to Highway 1. Big jack rabbit!
I'm
missing the South
Africa FIFA world cup semi-final match.

The marine park office.
The drive from the Sea of Cortez was, once again, both magnificent and uneventful, passing through the Catavina boulder fields, the high country, el Rosario, the community of Costa Rica and stopping south of San Quintin at Fidel's for a few hours of very windy suntanning. |
See this complete section of highway (it's quite magnificent) on the Southbound drive. |
Between San Quintin & El Rosario is a beautiful stretch of coast, including the hamlet of Costa Rica, where they sell rocks!
Then on up the road before nightfall, through Vincente Guerrero, Camalu to the San Telmo turnoff.
Up the newly paved road, I encountered the obligatory stray (wild?) horse. Awesome beautiful drive.
I didn't make the park gate before sunset, when they closed and stayed in a campsite at 7,000 feet with a large family from Tijuana.
Through the farming community of San Telmo and past Rancho Meling.
